Tracking Report #1

We will regularly update the number of times the phrase “truth is the greatest enemy of the State” appears in a Google search.  There will be exceptions, but nearly all of the hits will be pages that use the quotation, or parts of it.

For 12 April 2012, Google provides 521,000 results. This is up from 500,000 in December 2011.

  1. Hi, I sent a inquiry a while back asking about whether the Google results from your tracking could be misleading in some way and whether you checked a sample to confirm. Now, I, reluctantly, have to go further and question the results entirely. I have been doing a lot of research on the quote myself on Google and Engram. I don't get anywhere near the results you mention. I believe I am using the search engine correctly, Google Advanced search. I do get a lot of results indirectly through Engram and with the Internet archive, but nothing like what you get. Perhaps you can advise on your method, so I can try it.
And Where did you find the full Goebbels quote? There are plenty of examples of variants of the beginning, but almost nothing on the full quote. So where did you find it?

  2. I search for a key phrase ("truth is the greatest enemy of the state"). A Google search for that phrase now returns 38,3000 hits. Google limits its search queries to 32 words, so I can't search for the full quotation.

    Bing now has 23,400,00 results.

    I'm losing the battle.

Of course, not all of those results think the quotation is real, but I have a Google notification set up and regularly get new examples of its appearance.

The full version of the quotation is available on many pages, including the first hit on Bing:
